Robert M. Jones, Ph.D, is Professor Emeritus of Engineering Science and Mechanics at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) in Blacksburg, Virginia. Since the mid-1970s, Dr. Jones has authored four other books: Mechanics of Composite Materials (1st edition, 1975, and 2nd edition, 1999); Buckling of Bars, Plates, and Shells (2006); Deformation Theory of Plasticity (2009); and Design of Composite Structures (2015); edited Valery V. Vasiliev’s Mechanics of Composite Structures (1993) and Composite Pressure Vessels (2009); collaborated on Irving H. Shames’ Engineering Mechanics (1980); written over 65 reports and papers on composite materials and structures; and presented 77 short courses to industry, government, and universities. He was a Visiting Professor of Mechanics at South China Institute of Technology and a Visiting Professor of Strength of Composite Structures at Moscow Aviation Technology Institute.
He is a Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics and of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers; a Founder Member, Fellow, and former President of the American Society for Composites; and a Founder Member of the American Academy of Mechanics. He is a former Chairman of the Structures Technical Committee of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics; a former Member of the Structures and Materials Committee of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers; and a former Member of the U. S. National Committee on Theoretical and Applied Mechanics.
